Lesotho Lifts Ban on Potato Imports to Address Supply Shortages

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, announced that traders can resume applying for permits to import potatoes and other agricultural products previously banned in Lesotho.
The announcement was made in the National Assembly on Tuesday. Mr. Mofosi was responding to a point of order raised by All Basotho Convention (ABC) Leader, Mr. Nkaku Kabi. Mr. Kabi highlighted a decrease in local potato supply and urged the government to lift the import ban to stabilize the market.
Minister Mofosi confirmed that the Ministry has officially lifted the ban. The move aims to improve the availability of essential agricultural products in local markets. Traders are now permitted to secure import permits, which is expected to increase supply and ease pressure on consumers.
The government’s decision reflects its commitment to ensuring food security and addressing shortages that affect households and businesses. It also seeks to support traders who faced challenges due to the import restrictions.
With the ban lifted, analysts predict a steady increase in potato availability, which could stabilize prices and prevent further scarcity. The Ministry has encouraged traders to follow the official permit application process to facilitate smooth importation.
This policy adjustment marks a significant step in balancing local agricultural production with market demands and mitigating potential food insecurity.
