World Bank Reaffirms $403 Million Partnership to Support Lesotho’s Development

The World Bank Group has reaffirmed its strong partnership with Lesotho, with active financing of $403 million across nine development operations. Ms. Mafupu Mokoena, Operations Officer at the World Bank Group, outlined the institution’s achievements and ongoing programmes in Lesotho during a recent presentation. She highlighted that support is provided through the International Development Association, which targets low-income countries. Cumulative disbursements from the portfolio have reached $199 million, reflecting steady progress in advancing Lesotho’s national development priorities. In the 2026 financial year alone, $30 million—equivalent to 14 percent of the allocated funds—had already been disbursed as of January 2026.

World Bank support in Lesotho spans multiple sectors, including economic reform, infrastructure development and social services improvement. Each operation aligns with the country’s national development agenda, aiming to strengthen governance, enhance service delivery and foster economic growth. Ms. Mokoena emphasized that the financing is complemented by Advisory Services and Analytics (ASA), which provide technical expertise and evidence-based insights. The inaugural Lesotho Economic Update 2025, released under the ASA framework, focuses on fiscal policy as a key driver of inclusive economic growth. The report offers analytical guidance to support effective policymaking, improve fiscal management and promote sustainable development.

The partnership extends beyond financial assistance to include strategic support for policy reforms. World Bank programmes work closely with government institutions to accelerate structural reforms, improve public sector efficiency and build resilience against economic shocks. By providing both funding and analytical support, the World Bank aims to ensure that development initiatives produce measurable impacts on the ground. The portfolio’s scope reflects a commitment to addressing both immediate service delivery needs and long-term structural challenges facing Lesotho.

Ms. Mokoena underscored the importance of collaboration between the World Bank Group and the Government of Lesotho. She noted that joint efforts are critical in enhancing social service provision, strengthening infrastructure and supporting inclusive economic growth. The combination of investment, advisory services and capacity building helps create a foundation for sustainable development. These coordinated interventions are designed to improve the livelihoods of Basotho communities and reduce vulnerabilities across economic and social sectors.

The World Bank’s ongoing engagement demonstrates a long-term commitment to Lesotho’s development trajectory. By maintaining financial support, offering technical guidance and monitoring progress, the institution aims to reinforce stability and promote resilience. The partnership serves as a model for comprehensive development cooperation, combining resources, expertise and strategic planning to advance the country’s national objectives. Through continued collaboration, Lesotho is positioned to achieve more robust economic growth, improved social outcomes and sustainable improvements in quality of life.
