Trump Slashes Tariffs for Lesotho in New Executive Order

In a major shift in trade policy, United States President Donald Trump on Thursday, July 31, signed an executive order significantly reducing reciprocal tariffs for several African countries, including Lesotho. Under the order titled “Further Modifying the Reciprocal Tariff Rates,” tariffs on goods from Lesotho have been slashed from 50 percent to 15 percent—a move expected to ease trade tensions and stimulate exports.

The executive order outlines revised tariff rates for various countries across Africa, with Lesotho among those receiving the most favourable adjustment. Other countries such as Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, and Zambia also saw their tariffs reduced to 15 percent, while nations like Algeria, Libya, and South Africa remained at higher rates of up to 30 percent.

Minister of Trade, Industry, Business Development and Tourism, Mr. Mokhethi Shelile, welcomed the decision, calling it a positive step for Lesotho’s economy. “This is good news to think that we come from 50 percent,” he said, underscoring the challenges local exporters have faced under the previous tariff structure.

The reduction is expected to benefit key sectors in Lesotho, including textiles, agriculture, and manufacturing, by making the country’s products more competitive in the U.S. market. It also signals a shift toward improving bilateral trade relations and opens the door for increased economic cooperation between the two nations.

Trade analysts suggest that Lesotho’s inclusion in the tariff revision could enhance investor confidence and support local producers looking to expand into global markets. The move comes at a critical time as many developing countries continue to seek recovery pathways post-COVID-19 and amid shifting global trade dynamics.

With this executive order, the U.S. government appears to be taking steps to promote fairer trade practices and stronger economic partnerships with African nations. For Lesotho, it marks a significant diplomatic and economic win—one that could pave the way for greater export opportunities and long-term growth.
