Mokhotlong Farmers Set to Receive Training on Potato Seed Production

Members of the Mokhotlong Farmers Forum are gearing up for a five-day training on potato seed production, scheduled to begin on August 11 in Mokhotlong District. The training is aimed at enhancing local agricultural capacity and reducing the country’s reliance on imported potato seeds.

The announcement was made by the Forum’s Chairperson, Mr. Poelo Lesoetsa, during a members’ meeting held on Thursday. The gathering focused on strategies to boost agricultural production in the district, with particular attention given to sustainable and locally-driven solutions.

Mr. Lesoetsa stated that the training will equip farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for producing high-quality potato seeds locally. He emphasized the long-term goal of supplying these seeds to the government, thereby reducing the need for imports and creating a new economic opportunity for farmers in the region.

“This is a crucial step toward achieving self-sufficiency in seed production. By producing our own seeds, we not only cut costs but also create a reliable supply chain that benefits our local economy,” said Mr. Lesoetsa.

In addition to potato seed production, the meeting also covered important topics such as poultry farming and preparations for summer cropping, as the planting season approaches. Members explored strategies to improve productivity and resilience in both sectors, underscoring the importance of early planning and diversified farming practices.

The upcoming training reflects the growing commitment of Mokhotlong’s farming community to professional development and agricultural innovation. With support and knowledge-sharing, the district aims to become a leading contributor to Lesotho’s food security and agricultural sustainability.
