Lesotho Launches Wildfire Awareness and Environmental Campaign in Qacha’s Nek

Beginning July 8 through to July 25, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MEF), in partnership with the Lesotho Mounted Police Services (LMPS), will roll out a comprehensive environmental awareness and wildfire prevention campaign across Qacha’s Nek. The campaign will specifically target regions that have been hardest hit by wildfires in recent years.
Communities set to benefit from the initiative include Ha Mphahama, Ha Mapote, Nts’upe Moreneng and Community Council, Khubetsoana-Tiping, Ha Motloang, Sekokoaneng, Ha Ramats’eliso, and Ha Chaka. These areas have suffered extensive damage due to the repeated and often uncontrolled burning of rangelands—a practice that continues to threaten both the environment and local livelihoods.
According to MEF District Coordinator Mrs. ’Matieho Maseka, the campaign is long overdue. “Our goal is to promote sustainable natural resource management,” she said. “We have delayed starting this campaign for too long.”
The initiative aims to educate residents on the dangers of wildfire, provide training on fire prevention techniques, and encourage community-driven approaches to preserving natural resources. Workshops, village meetings, and patrols conducted jointly by the MEF and LMPS are part of the outreach plan.
Environmental degradation, especially in fragile highland ecosystems like those in Qacha’s Nek, poses a significant threat to biodiversity, soil stability, and water resources. By addressing the root causes—such as illegal or unregulated burning—the government hopes to curb further destruction and foster long-term sustainability.
With the growing impact of climate change intensifying weather patterns and fire risk, this campaign marks a crucial step toward protecting Lesotho’s natural heritage and ensuring communities are equipped to handle environmental challenges responsibly.
