Lesotho Establishes Radiation Protection Agency to Safeguard Public and Promote Safety Awareness

In a major step toward improving public health and safety, Lesotho has officially established the Radiation Protection Agency (RPA) to raise awareness and regulate the use of radiation across key sectors. The move is aimed at promoting a culture of radiation safety among professionals and the general public.
The Agency’s Representative, Mr. Mojalefa Sello, confirmed the development and emphasized that the establishment of the RPA marks a new chapter in national efforts to ensure radiation protection in areas such as health, agriculture, and energy.
“Radiation plays a vital role in many sectors, but without a proper regulatory body, it can also pose serious risks,” Mr. Sello explained. “The Radiation Protection Agency is here to make sure these technologies are used responsibly and safely.”
Mr. Sello noted that one of the Agency’s immediate priorities is to educate Basotho about the types of radiation, their uses, and the potential health risks when not properly managed. To do this, the RPA has launched a national awareness campaign through various communication platforms to reach both professionals and communities.
He stressed that while radiation is essential in medical imaging, cancer treatment, and food preservation, the lack of proper regulation can lead to uncontrolled exposure, posing a danger to both people and the environment.
By enhancing knowledge and enforcing safety standards, the RPA seeks to minimize the harmful effects of radiation while supporting its safe and beneficial applications.
The formation of the Radiation Protection Agency signals Lesotho’s commitment to aligning with international safety protocols and protecting citizens in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. As awareness grows, so too will the country’s capacity to manage radiation safely—ensuring that progress never comes at the cost of public health.
