LDF Commander Lt. Gen. Mojalefa Letsoela Secures Three-Year Extension

Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Commander, Lieutenant General Mojalefa Letsoela, has been reappointed to lead the national army for an additional three years. The extension, confirmed by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, takes effect from August 4, 2025, and will run until August 3, 2028.
In an interview held on Tuesday, Mr. Tau disclosed the details of the renewed term and emphasized that the decision falls within the constitutional powers of the Prime Minister. “The Prime Minister has the authority to appoint the LDF Commander based on his discretion, and in this case, he chose to extend Lieutenant General Letsoela’s leadership,” Tau stated.
Lieutenant General Letsoela has held the top military post since January 23, 2018, after succeeding the late Lieutenant General Khoantle Mots’omots’o. His initial retirement was scheduled for August 30, 2025. However, the government has opted to extend his tenure, citing the need for continued stability and leadership within the army.
Under his command, the LDF has undergone key strategic and structural reforms, aiming to professionalize the military and strengthen national security. His leadership has also been marked by efforts to improve civil-military relations and uphold constitutional governance.
The announcement has sparked discussions across various sectors, with many viewing the extension as a vote of confidence in Letsoela’s leadership and his role in maintaining order and discipline within the defence force.
As the country continues to prioritize security and stability, the decision to retain Lieutenant General Letsoela is expected to provide continuity in military leadership and contribute to national cohesion over the next three years.
