Acting Minister of Energy Launches United Nations Electric Vehicles in Lesotho

The Acting Minister of Energy, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, officially launched the United Nations Electric Vehicles at UN House on Thursday, marking another significant step toward sustainable transportation and environmental protection in Lesotho. This celebratory event, which drew members of the UN family and representatives from the European Union, marks the second launch of its kind in the country.

The introduction of these electric vehicles (EVs) is part of a growing movement to embrace renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It also reinforces Lesotho’s commitment to climate action and green development, in line with both national policies and global environmental goals.

In his keynote speech, Minister Rapapa highlighted the importance of transitioning to clean energy solutions. He described the launch as a key milestone in the country’s effort to reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations.

“This is not just about introducing a new car. It’s about changing the way we think about energy and mobility,” he said. “Electric vehicles represent a cleaner, more responsible choice. By embracing them, we are making a conscious effort to leave behind a greener planet.”

Professor Rapapa used the platform to call on the private sector to actively participate in the green transition. He urged local businesses and entrepreneurs to lead the way by introducing electric vehicles into the market and investing in EV charging infrastructure. He also emphasized that electric vehicles are not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable, often costing less to maintain and operate than traditional fuel-powered cars.

As climate change continues to pose global challenges, the launch of these electric vehicles sends a strong message that Lesotho is serious about sustainability. It also demonstrates the crucial role that partnerships—like those between the UN, the EU, and the Government of Lesotho—can play in driving clean energy solutions.

With momentum building and awareness growing, the event serves as both a celebration and a call to action for stakeholders across sectors to support and scale up the shift toward green mobility in Lesotho.
