Quthing District Awaits Temporary Road Following Mochotoane Culvert Collapse

The Quthing District is currently facing transportation disruptions after the Amoco culvert at Mochotoane stream was destroyed on Sunday afternoon due to heavy rains. The culvert lies on the road connecting Quthing town to Mount Moorosi, a key route for residents, health services, and local businesses.
Quthing District Administrator, Mr. Bonang Tlali, confirmed that the incident was reported to the Department of Public Works. He stated that the Roads Directorate has committed to constructing a temporary way to restore access, with work scheduled to begin on Monday. Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling in the area until repairs are completed.
The damage has raised significant concerns for local health services. District Medical Officer, Dr. Makarant’si Mohlapiso, explained that five health clinics depend on the Mochotoane crossing to refer patients to the district government hospital. The disruption could delay emergency services and critical medical referrals, particularly for patients requiring urgent care.
Safety measures have been implemented to prevent accidents. Inspector Joele Joele from the Quthing Police Station reported that warning signs have been placed near the damaged culvert. She stressed that walking or driving on the compromised structure remains extremely dangerous despite public awareness efforts.
Community members are urged to follow the designated detours and avoid the affected crossing. The construction of a temporary road will provide interim access while permanent repairs are planned. The incident highlights the vulnerability of infrastructure in the district to extreme weather events. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and work toward solutions that ensure safe and reliable transport for residents and essential services in Quthing.
