MISA Lesotho Honors Veteran Journalists and Marks Progress on Press Freedom in Maseru

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Lesotho marked World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday with a special ceremony in Maseru dedicated to honouring long-serving journalists and broadcasters. The event brought together media practitioners, industry stakeholders, and partners to reflect on the role of journalism in strengthening democracy and public accountability. It also provided a platform to recognize individuals who have spent many years serving the nation through consistent reporting and broadcasting work. The commemoration highlighted both achievements in media development and ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Lesotho. The gathering placed strong emphasis on the value of press freedom and professional dedication in a changing media environment.

Speaking at the event, MISA Lesotho Chairperson Mr. Khotsofalang Koloi described the occasion as an important moment for the media sector to reflect on its journey and progress. He noted that media freedom in Lesotho has improved over the years, with a noticeable expansion in media diversity across the country. According to him, the growth of radio stations, print outlets, and digital platforms has created a more dynamic and accessible media landscape. He emphasized that this development allows citizens to access a wider range of information sources than in previous years. At the same time, he acknowledged that the sector continues to face financial pressures that affect sustainability.

Mr. Koloi further explained that MISA recognizes and values the increasing diversity within the media industry. He said that the expansion of online platforms has played a major role in reshaping how information is shared and consumed. However, he pointed out that journalists and media houses are still dealing with significant economic challenges that limit growth and stability. Advertising revenue remains a key concern, as it directly affects the ability of media organizations to operate effectively. He indicated that the newly elected committee plans to engage businesses and stakeholders to explore ways of improving financial sustainability in the sector.

A central focus of the discussions was the importance of strengthening collaboration between the media and the private sector. Mr. Koloi stated that building strong relationships with advertisers and business partners could help improve financial resilience within the industry. He added that such partnerships must support editorial independence while ensuring that media houses remain viable. The awards ceremony, he said, was also designed to motivate journalists who continue to work under difficult conditions. He emphasized that long-serving media professionals have played a key role in promoting press freedom and informing the public over many years.

On behalf of Econet Telecom Lesotho, Public Relations Specialist Mr. Retselisitsoe Nkhahle expressed appreciation for the work done by journalists and broadcasters across the country. He stated that the company recognizes the critical role media professionals play in shaping public understanding and communication. He also highlighted Econet Telecom Lesotho’s commitment to working closely with the media sector to improve access to digital communication platforms. According to him, the company aims to support easier and more inclusive digital engagement for all citizens. He further encouraged journalists to embrace opportunities that promote digital literacy and financial awareness.

Speaking on behalf of the long-serving journalists, Mr. ‘Meko Phohleli expressed gratitude for the recognition received during the ceremony. He noted that the journalism profession has often been challenging, with demanding working conditions and limited resources. Despite these difficulties, he said journalists have remained committed to their responsibility of serving the nation through accurate and consistent reporting. He emphasized that recognition of their work serves as motivation to continue upholding professional standards. His remarks reflected a shared sense of dedication among veteran media workers who have contributed to Lesotho’s media development over the years.

The commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Maseru reinforced the importance of protecting and supporting journalism in Lesotho. It highlighted progress made in expanding media platforms while also drawing attention to ongoing economic and structural challenges within the industry. The event demonstrated a collective commitment from MISA Lesotho, media professionals, and partners to strengthen press freedom and ensure a more sustainable future for the sector. It also underscored the importance of honoring those who have dedicated their careers to informing the public under difficult circumstances. The ceremony closed with a renewed call for collaboration, resilience, and continued support for a free and vibrant media landscape in Lesotho.
