Lesotho Strengthens Commitment to Gender Equality at CSW70

Lesotho’s participation at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) highlighted the nation’s steadfast commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women at local, regional, and global levels. The Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr Matete ‘Nena, presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s efforts in strengthening social protection systems, increasing women’s participation in economic activities, and combating gender-based violence. He emphasized that the integration of data-driven policymaking is crucial for accelerating the implementation of international gender commitments and ensuring that policies respond effectively to the needs of women and girls. Lesotho’s engagement at the session demonstrated a proactive approach to aligning national strategies with broader global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, and the Beijing Platform for Action. This approach reinforces the country’s position as an active contributor to global conversations on gender equality.
In a strategic effort to foster regional collaboration, Lesotho co-hosted a high-level side event with Eswatini and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) titled “Leveraging the African Gender and Development Index to Monitor and Report on Gender Equality Commitments.” The event highlighted the African Gender and Development Index (AGDI) as a critical instrument for monitoring progress across social, economic, and political dimensions of gender equality. Experts showcased how the AGDI provides reliable, disaggregated data that enables policymakers to identify persistent gaps and design targeted interventions. Lesotho stressed that accurate data collection and analysis is key to strengthening accountability and ensuring that gender equality initiatives yield measurable results. The event also provided a platform for sharing best practices and fostering partnerships aimed at improving reporting mechanisms and enhancing policy effectiveness across the continent.
Lesotho’s active role at CSW70 underlines the importance of collaboration and regional partnerships in advancing gender equality. By engaging with ECA and neighboring countries such as Eswatini, the country demonstrated a commitment to collective action in addressing the challenges women face across Africa. The session allowed Lesotho to share its experiences and achievements while learning from regional counterparts, creating opportunities for joint strategies that accelerate progress for women and girls. By emphasizing data-driven approaches, the country positions itself to implement evidence-based policies that not only close existing gender gaps but also strengthen long-term monitoring and accountability frameworks. Lesotho’s participation reflects a strategic and determined effort to translate international commitments into concrete actions that improve the lives of women and contribute to sustainable development across the region.
Lesotho’s engagement at CSW70 represents a clear and tangible commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. The combination of national initiatives, regional collaboration, and the use of tools like the AGDI illustrates a comprehensive approach to tackling persistent gender challenges. By prioritizing reliable data, fostering partnerships, and maintaining active participation in global forums, Lesotho sets a strong example of how countries can align domestic policies with international frameworks. This strategic engagement not only supports women’s rights within the country but also contributes to the broader African and global agenda for gender equality. Lesotho’s efforts demonstrate that sustained commitment, coordinated action, and evidence-based policymaking are essential to achieving meaningful and lasting change for women and girls.
