Lesotho Awards Contract for Matlali–Lebakeng Road Upgrade and Senqu River Bridge

The Government of Lesotho has awarded China International Water and Electric Corporation a contract to upgrade the Matlali–Lebakeng road and construct a Bailey bridge over the Senqu River near Lebakeng village. The project will be executed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in partnership with the Roads Directorate.
According to an introductory letter seen by the Agency, the four-year contract is set to commence this month. The contractor will engage directly and indirectly with project-affected persons across the district to ensure community participation during implementation.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the development, calling it long overdue and vital for mobility, safety, and access to basic services. Mosenekeng Chief Lekhetho Makhaola highlighted the project’s potential to create employment while improving connectivity. He noted that the road and bridge will help residents reach essential services, including healthcare, particularly during periods of heavy rain when the river becomes dangerous to cross.
Nts’upe Community Council Councillor from Sekoti, Ms. Nothaemese Jonase, emphasized that the road’s poor condition makes travel hazardous for motorists. She stressed that the new bridge will ensure safer movement of people. Lebakeng resident Mr. Hopo Motopi added that crossing the river has always been risky, especially for children, the elderly, and sick residents, and that the bridge will provide safety and dignity to daily life.
Mosenekeng villager Mrs. ’Mathetso Majake described how access to the Lebakeng Health Centre becomes nearly impossible during heavy rainfall. She recalled incidents where residents were unable to collect medication or attend appointments due to the river overflowing, sometimes resulting in fatalities. She praised the government for addressing these challenges.
The Matlali–Lebakeng road upgrade and the Senqu River bridge construction are expected to improve safety, connectivity, and access to essential services in Qacha’s Nek. The project marks a significant step toward reducing isolation, supporting livelihoods, and promoting long-term development in the district.
