Lesotho Awards 31 Contracts for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Projects

The Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, has awarded contracts to 31 contractors for the construction of rural water supply systems and VIP latrines across Lesotho. The initiative aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation in rural communities.
During his address, Minister Moleko emphasized the critical importance of water and the need for careful management of the country’s abundant resources. He noted that although Lesotho supplies over 40% of regional water to neighboring countries, the local population currently receives only 3.4% of these resources. The minister called on contractors to maintain strong working relationships with their employees and ensure timely payments to support smooth project implementation.
Mr. Liphooko Mokotoane, Director of the Department of Rural Water Supply, explained that contractors were selected based on merit and proven capability. He outlined the distribution of projects across districts: three contractors in Mokhotlong, four in Leribe, three in Maseru, three in Butha-Buthe, two in Berea, three in Mafeteng, three in Mohale’s Hoek, seven in Thaba-Tseka, and one in Qacha’s Nek.
One contractor, Mr. Mosiuoa Mokhosi, pledged to complete his current assignment within the agreed timeframe. He also appealed for additional work opportunities, highlighting that many contractors have been unemployed for six years since their last projects.
The awarded contracts mark a significant step toward improving rural water access and sanitation infrastructure in Lesotho. Successful implementation is expected to enhance public health, support sustainable water management, and provide employment opportunities for local contractors.
