King Letsie III Champions Nutrition and Food Security at Melikane Visit

Letsie III has reinforced the urgency of improving household nutrition and strengthening food systems during a visit to Melikane Combined School in Mahoeng, Qacha’s Nek. The tour formed part of a community driven initiative led by Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, aimed at promoting sustainable food production and healthier diets. The visit brought together farmers, nutrition clubs, and learners who are actively working to improve food security at grassroots level. The setting reflected a practical approach where communities are not only educated but also empowered to take action. This initiative highlights a broader national effort to address malnutrition through local solutions.

During the visit, the King moved through a range of exhibition stalls where farmers and nutrition club members displayed locally grown produce and shared knowledge on balanced diets. These stalls showcased crops such as vegetables and fruits that are essential for improving daily nutrition. Community members demonstrated simple, cost effective methods of food production that can be replicated at household level. The presence of nutrition clubs showed how organized groups can drive change through education and shared responsibility. Two students from the host school also took part, showing that young people are being included in efforts to promote healthy living from an early age.

King Letsie III commended the progress made in spreading nutrition awareness across communities, noting that the message is beginning to reach households effectively. He acknowledged that initiatives like these are critical in changing long term eating habits and improving health outcomes. However, he also raised concern about the scale of the challenge that remains. Statistics show that 48 percent of children under five in Qacha’s Nek are affected by malnutrition, a figure that requires urgent attention. He stressed that addressing child nutrition must remain a top priority, as it directly impacts the future development of Lesotho.

The King called on Basotho to take personal responsibility for their diets by prioritizing nutritious food and making better use of available land for food production. He emphasized that sustainable agriculture at household level can significantly reduce food insecurity. His message focused on practical action, urging families to grow their own food and adopt healthier eating habits. This approach aligns with ongoing government efforts to build resilience within communities. It also reflects a shift towards preventive measures rather than relying only on external support.

Khothatso Ts’ooana, Principal Secretary in the Ministry, expressed appreciation for the King’s continued support and the community’s active participation. He noted that collaboration between government and local communities is key to achieving lasting impact. School leaders also shared their efforts to promote nutrition through initiatives such as planting fruit trees and maintaining vegetable gardens. These activities not only improve access to nutritious food but also serve as educational tools for learners. Schools are becoming important centers for promoting healthy lifestyles and practical agricultural skills.

The visit to Melikane Combined School reflects a clear and focused effort to tackle malnutrition through community engagement, education, and sustainable farming practices. King Letsie III’s involvement adds visibility and urgency to the issue, encouraging wider participation across the country. While progress is evident, the high rate of child malnutrition shows that more work is needed at every level. Continued collaboration between government, communities, and schools will be essential in driving change. Strengthening household food security remains a critical step toward building a healthier and more resilient nation.
