EU Election Follow-up Mission Engages Lesotho on Electoral Reform Progress

The European Union Election Follow-up Mission (EUEFM), led by Chief of Mission and Member of the European Parliament Andreas Schieder, visited Lesotho to assess progress on the recommendations from the EU Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) Lesotho 2022. The mission focused on evaluating reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027/2028 elections.
During their deployment, the EUEFM hosted a high-level roundtable on 21 November, bringing together more than 30 key stakeholders from Lesotho’s electoral and governance sectors. Participants included representatives from civil society, national institutions, and other bodies involved in electoral administration.
The discussions centered on the voter registration process and pending electoral legislation, reflecting a shared commitment to improving transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in the electoral system. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of proactive engagement and collaboration to address challenges and ensure that reforms are effectively implemented before the next election cycle.
The mission highlighted the critical role of dialogue between government institutions, civil society, and international partners in fostering credible and trustworthy elections. The EUEFM engagement demonstrates the EU’s continued support for Lesotho’s democratic processes and its commitment to promoting stable, accountable governance in the country.
By focusing on voter registration improvements and legislative reform, Lesotho is taking steps toward more robust and transparent electoral procedures, ensuring that citizens’ participation in future elections is fully protected and enhanced.
