Lesotho Strengthens Partnership with IOM on Migration and Diaspora Engagement

This morning, the Minister of Foreign Affairs received a courtesy call from Mr. Yitna Getachew, Chief of Mission for South Africa and Sub-Regional Director for Southern Africa at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The visit marked Mr. Getachew’s first formal engagement with the Ministry since assuming his role, providing an opportunity to discuss key regional and national migration priorities. Both parties highlighted the importance of structured dialogue to address mobility, regional migration trends, and the role of the Basotho diaspora in national development. The discussions also reinforced the need for coordinated policies that ensure safe, orderly, and regular migration across borders. This engagement reflects Lesotho’s commitment to deepening collaboration with international partners on migration management and development outcomes.

During the meeting, the parties explored the movement of persons within the Southern African region, emphasizing the social and economic impacts of migration on both sending and receiving communities. Attention was given to the importance of diaspora engagement as a driver of investment, knowledge transfer, and skills development in Lesotho. Mr. Getachew underscored IOM’s commitment to supporting national governments in creating effective frameworks for migration management while protecting the rights of migrants. The Ministry noted the value of leveraging regional cooperation mechanisms to address challenges such as irregular migration, border management, and access to essential services. Both sides agreed that a collaborative approach would enhance policy implementation and improve outcomes for migrants and host communities alike.

The meeting also served as a platform to discuss upcoming high-level engagements, including the planned visit of IOM Director General, Amy Pope, to the Kingdom of Lesotho in early March. This visit is expected to provide further guidance on technical cooperation, project support, and capacity-building initiatives. The Ministry and IOM explored opportunities for joint programs aimed at strengthening migration governance, improving data collection, and promoting regional knowledge exchange. The conversation highlighted the potential for integrating diaspora contributions into national development planning, particularly in sectors such as education, health, and entrepreneurship. The discussions reinforced the shared commitment to sustainable solutions that balance national interests with the rights and welfare of migrants.

By hosting Mr. Getachew, the Ministry reaffirmed its strategic focus on international partnerships as a mechanism for advancing migration policies and diaspora engagement. The meeting emphasized the mutual benefits of collaboration between Lesotho and IOM, including enhanced technical support, policy guidance, and implementation of programs that directly benefit Basotho at home and abroad. Both parties recognized that strengthening institutional ties and communication channels is essential for addressing complex migration challenges effectively. The Ministry also highlighted the importance of regional coordination, particularly in the context of Southern Africa, where mobility is closely linked to economic development and social cohesion. This engagement sets the stage for deeper collaboration in the months ahead, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive migration management.

The courtesy call underscored Lesotho’s commitment to promoting safe, regular, and beneficial migration while leveraging diaspora engagement for national development. By strengthening its partnership with IOM, the country is better positioned to address migration challenges, improve policy frameworks, and create opportunities for Basotho communities both within and outside Lesotho. The discussions laid the groundwork for continued cooperation, technical support, and capacity-building initiatives that will enhance the country’s migration management systems. As the Kingdom prepares to host the IOM Director General, these engagements highlight a proactive approach to international collaboration and underscore the government’s dedication to the welfare of its citizens. Lesotho’s engagement with IOM reflects a strategic investment in sustainable development, regional integration, and inclusive growth for the nation.
