Lesotho’s Tourism Minister Calls for Stronger Partnership with the Media

Lesotho’s Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo, has emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a mutual and beneficial relationship with the media. Speaking during a media workshop held on Thursday, Minister Maqelepo highlighted the crucial role that the media plays in promoting the country’s tourism, arts, and culture sectors.
The Minister stated that one of the key mandates of his ministry is to position Lesotho as a preferred destination for both local and international tourists. This will be achieved through focused efforts on arts and sports development, as well as the conservation and management of the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“Our goal is to improve tourism in Lesotho by making it a destination of choice. To achieve this, we need the media as a key partner in spreading positive and accurate information about what our country has to offer,” said Minister Maqelepo.
He further stressed the importance of building a strong relationship with journalists and media houses across the country. According to the Minister, empowering journalism at all levels will contribute to professional and effective news reporting, ensuring that both domestic and international audiences receive timely and credible information.
“We want to empower journalism and news reporting at all levels, so that our stories are told effectively. This will not only promote tourism but also support the growth of arts and sports sectors, and preserve our cultural heritage,” he added.
Minister Maqelepo concluded by announcing plans to establish a two-way communication channel between the ministry and the media. This platform will allow journalists to easily access information, seek clarification, and engage in constructive dialogue with the Ministry.
“The creation of this two-way communication channel is our way of ensuring continuous engagement and transparency between the Ministry and the media fraternity,” he said.
The workshop was well attended by members of the media, communication experts, and stakeholders from the tourism and cultural sectors, marking what many hope will be the start of a new era of collaboration between the government and the press in Lesotho.
