MICSTI and Minister Shelile Celebrate Back-to-School Initiatives Across Lesotho

On January 26, 2026, Lesotho marked a strong commitment to education with back-to-school events led by the Ministry of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) and the Ministry of Education and Training. Honourable Minister Nthati Moorosi and Honourable Mokhethi Shelile engaged learners, teachers, and communities to promote academic excellence, school attendance, and the role of education in national development.

At Holy Cross High School in Mohale’s Hoek, MICSTI hosted a Back-to-School event to strengthen education delivery and support learning in remote areas. Minister Moorosi highlighted the Ministry’s focus on improving education quality, particularly in rural communities, and on equipping learners with the skills needed for a digital future. Principal Secretary of MICSTI, Mr Kanono Ramashamole, noted that the event celebrated top-performing LGCSE students while providing assistance to needy learners, emphasizing the importance of recognition and support in sustaining academic success.

A key feature of the Holy Cross event was the launch of a new computer laboratory, fitted with 20 computers connected to fibre internet. This upgrade aims to enhance digital literacy, research capabilities, and access to online educational resources. High-achieving learners received awards and essential school supplies, while teachers were honoured with trophies, medals, and a cash prize of M1,000 each. The Minister of Law and Justice, Honourable Richard Ramoeletsi, also attended, reinforcing government-wide support for education development.

In Lithabaneng, Minister Mokhethi Shelile joined learners and teachers to commemorate National Back to School Day, an initiative promoting school attendance and the value of education. Minister Shelile emphasized that education drives economic growth and urged students to avoid drug abuse due to its harmful impact on academic performance and personal development. He also encouraged parents and guardians to actively support their children’s education, noting the critical role of family involvement in student success.

During the Lithabaneng celebrations, top-performing learners received gifts, including school uniforms, to reward their achievements and motivate continued dedication. The event reinforced the message that education, discipline, and community support are essential to nurturing skilled and responsible future leaders.

Both events demonstrated a coordinated government effort to invest in learners, empower teachers, and integrate technology into education. They highlighted the value of recognition, resources, and active engagement by all stakeholders, reinforcing that quality education remains central to Lesotho’s national development and future opportunities.
