Lesotho Embassy in Brussels Hosts Delegation Eyeing Fair-Trade Mineral Partnership

On Friday, 26 July 2025, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho in Brussels hosted a high-level delegation from Trading and Engineering Company (TEC) and Elikia Diamonds, two globally recognized firms with a strong track record in responsible and traceable mineral trading. The visit signals a promising opportunity for Lesotho’s artisanal mining sector, as the companies expressed keen interest in establishing a fair-trade partnership with local miners.
During the meeting, the delegation outlined a vision to support sustainable livelihoods, promote ethical sourcing, and enable Basotho artisanal miners to tap into premium global markets for both diamonds and rare earth elements. Their approach emphasizes not only economic opportunity but also transparency and community empowerment, aligning well with Lesotho’s national priorities for sustainable development.
One of the most notable aspects of the visit was the involvement of Elikia Diamonds, a registered member of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC). This affiliation positions the firm—and by extension, Lesotho—to access one of the world’s most prestigious diamond markets. With Antwerp serving as a hub for high-value buyers and rigorous compliance standards, the partnership could provide direct market access for Lesotho’s diamonds, potentially increasing their value and visibility on the international stage.
The delegation has formally requested an introduction to Lesotho’s Ministry of Mining, seeking guidance on the country’s regulatory frameworks and pathways for formal engagement. Their goal is to work closely with the Ministry, local communities, and relevant stakeholders to explore mutually beneficial opportunities that prioritize ethical practices and long-term economic resilience.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations has reaffirmed its full support for initiatives that attract responsible investment and unlock the value of Lesotho’s vast mineral resources. The Ministry emphasized that any partnerships will be built on the principles of transparency, community benefit, and sustainable impact.
This engagement marks an encouraging step toward diversifying Lesotho’s mineral sector, fostering global partnerships that not only enhance trade but also elevate the role of artisanal miners in the national economy. As discussions progress, stakeholders remain optimistic about the potential for this collaboration to become a model for fair-trade mineral development in the region.
