Lesotho Launches Free Treatment for Lumpy Skin Disease in Cattle

The Thabo Mofosi, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, held a media briefing in Maseru to update the public on efforts to control lumpy skin disease in cattle. The Minister confirmed that the required medicine arrived in Lesotho yesterday and has already been dispatched to multiple districts. The initiative aims to protect livestock, safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. Hon. Mofosi emphasized that treatment will be provided free of charge, with only sick animals receiving the medication to avoid unnecessary administration. The project involves a coordinated effort to ensure timely delivery and effective treatment across the country.

The Ministry has deployed twenty-seven vehicles to transport veterinary teams to the affected districts, ensuring medicine reaches all areas efficiently. Veterinary doctors will visit animals directly at their living quarters to prevent large gatherings, which could accelerate the spread of lumpy skin disease. This approach allows for targeted treatment while minimizing the risk of contagion among cattle. Hon. Mofosi highlighted that this method prioritizes animal welfare and maximizes the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign. Farmers are encouraged to cooperate with veterinary teams and follow guidance to protect their livestock.

To support farmers further, the Ministry of Agriculture has made veterinary contact numbers available on its official Facebook page. Livestock owners can use these numbers to report sick animals and request assistance from trained veterinary personnel. The communication channel ensures rapid response to new cases and strengthens coordination between farmers and veterinary teams. By providing both treatment and accessible support, the Ministry aims to reduce mortality, improve cattle health and maintain the stability of Lesotho’s agricultural sector. The campaign underscores the government’s commitment to food security, livestock welfare and the economic resilience of rural communities.
