Peace Corps Volunteers Sworn In at Maseru Ceremony
At least 25 volunteers from the 92nd Cohort of the Peace Corps were officially sworn in during a ceremony held in Maseru on Tuesday, marking the beginning of their mission in the Education and Health sectors of Lesotho.
The event was a significant occasion, as King Letsie III of Lesotho addressed the attendees, highlighting the importance of the partnership between Lesotho and the United States of America. His Majesty described the swearing-in ceremony as a symbol of the warm friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
“This event signifies not just the arrival of these volunteers but also the deep partnership between Lesotho and the United States,” King Letsie III said. “It is a partnership we must celebrate, for it is built on mutual respect and the desire to help improve the lives of the Basotho people.”
The volunteers, who will focus on supporting Lesotho in the areas of health and education, were commended by the King for their commitment to dedicating their lives to the service of the country. “You are here to help us manage the everyday challenges we face in health and education,” the King remarked. “It is not a journey without its challenges, but each one will provide an opportunity for growth and learning.”
In a statement, Mr. Thomas Haines, the Charge D’Affaires of the United States to Lesotho, also reflected on the significance of the event. He noted that the swearing-in ceremony serves as tangible evidence of the strong and ongoing partnership between the United States and Lesotho. “The volunteers’ commitment to serve here is a reflection of the good relationship between our two countries, and we are proud to be part of this important journey,” said Mr. Haines.
The Peace Corps volunteers will now begin their work in various communities across Lesotho, offering their skills and knowledge to help tackle the pressing challenges in health and education. Their efforts are expected to make a lasting impact in improving the lives of many Basotho, further strengthening the bond between Lesotho and the United States.
