Celebrating the Vital Role of Older Persons: International Day of Older Persons in Maseru

The Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, through its department of Elderly Care Services, is gearing up to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on October 11, 2024, at Pitso Ground in Maseru. This annual observance aims to recognize and honor the significant contributions that older individuals make in fostering vibrant and inclusive communities.

According to Mrs. Mpho Makhetha, communications officer for the Ministry, this year’s theme is “The Part We Play: Celebrating the Integral Role of Older Persons in Our Communities.” This theme emphasizes the vital positions that older persons hold within society, showcasing how their experiences, wisdom, and skills shape the communities around them.

Mrs. Makhetha highlighted that the event will serve as a platform to shine a light on the indispensable roles older persons fulfill within their families and broader communities. “Older individuals are not only repositories of knowledge and tradition but also active participants in community development and family dynamics,” she stated. Their involvement ranges from caregiving to mentoring younger generations, contributing to a sense of continuity and stability within society.

The celebration will feature various activities aimed at engaging community members and raising awareness about the importance of valuing and supporting older individuals. It will provide an opportunity for people of all ages to come together to acknowledge the wealth of experience that older persons bring to their communities. The observance also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by older individuals, including social isolation, health issues, and the need for support services that cater to their unique needs.

This year’s event at Pitso Ground is expected to attract a diverse audience, including community leaders, youth organizations, and families, all coming together to celebrate and advocate for the rights and dignity of older persons. It aims to foster intergenerational dialogue and promote understanding between younger and older community members.

As the International Day of Older Persons approaches, the Ministry encourages all citizens to participate in the celebration and reflect on the vital roles that older persons play in their lives. By honoring and supporting older individuals, the community can cultivate an environment that values every stage of life, ensuring that all members feel respected and included.
