Celebrating 200 Years of the Basotho Nation: The Launch of the 3 Ranges Trail

In a historic celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Basotho Nation by King Moshoeshoe I, the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo, officially launched the 3 Ranges Trail, a remarkable hiking route that connects Lesotho’s lowest point to its highest. The event took place at Morifi, thanks to the initiative of the Thapoha Hiking Club, which aims to promote the rich natural heritage of Lesotho while encouraging outdoor exploration.

During the launch, Hon. Maqelepo emphasized Lesotho’s incredible beauty and the potential it holds for tourism development. “Lesotho is blessed with beautiful places that can attract tourists,” he stated, highlighting the opportunity for sustainable tourism to thrive in the region. The 3 Ranges Trail is designed not only to showcase the stunning landscapes but also to provide visitors with a unique experience that connects them to the culture and traditions of the Basotho people.

The minister also stressed the economic benefits that the trail could bring to local communities. By developing the hiking route and enhancing the surrounding areas, there is a chance to create temporary jobs for residents, from guiding tourists to offering local crafts and refreshments. This development is seen as a critical step toward empowering communities and enhancing their livelihoods through tourism.

In his address, Hon. Maqelepo urged villagers to consider building home stays and accommodation facilities for tourists. “Once the place has been developed, we need to ensure that there are adequate accommodations for visitors,” he said. This call to action is intended to inspire local communities to take ownership of the tourism initiative and invest in their futures, ultimately leading to the growth of a sustainable tourism industry that benefits all.

The launch of the 3 Ranges Trail is a significant milestone for Lesotho, commemorating a rich heritage while paving the way for economic opportunities through tourism. As the trail opens to hikers, it will not only serve as a scenic journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Lesotho but also as a testament to the nation’s resilience and commitment to preserving its cultural and natural heritage.

As Lesotho embarks on this new chapter, the hope is that the 3 Ranges Trail will inspire both locals and tourists alike to explore the beauty of the country while fostering a deeper appreciation for the Basotho Nation’s history and traditions. With ongoing support from the government and local communities, this initiative promises to shine a light on Lesotho as a premier hiking destination in Southern Africa.
