Lesotho’s Ministry of Mining Engages Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners for Development
The Ministry of Mining in Lesotho recently convened a meeting aimed at enlightening artisanal and small-scale mining entrepreneurs about the ministry’s progress in implementing initiatives to support their sectors. This gathering underscored the government’s commitment to harnessing the country’s rich mineral resources to foster economic growth and address pressing social issues such as unemployment.
Minister of Mining, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko, addressed attendees by highlighting the significant potential that the mining industry holds for the development of Lesotho. He pointed out that the country is endowed with a variety of natural resources that can be effectively mined to spur economic advancement. “The mining industry is pivotal for the development of our nation,” Moleko stated, emphasizing that with the right support and resources, mining could transform the livelihoods of many Basotho.
During the meeting, Minister Moleko announced that the ministry is preparing to undertake a comprehensive study aimed at mapping the composition of various natural resources across Lesotho. This study is expected to provide crucial insights that will enable more Basotho to participate in the mining sector. By identifying untapped resources, the ministry hopes to create opportunities for local entrepreneurs, thereby empowering communities economically.
Addressing the critical issue of unemployment, which has been a persistent challenge in the country, Moleko expressed optimism that increased engagement in the mining industry could provide viable employment options for many Basotho. “By encouraging local participation in mining, we can help fill the gap in employment opportunities and contribute to poverty alleviation,” he remarked.
The meeting served as a platform for dialogue between the ministry and the small-scale miners, allowing participants to share their experiences and challenges in the industry. Such engagement is essential for developing targeted strategies that address the needs of these entrepreneurs, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable mining sector.
As Lesotho continues to explore its mining potential, the Ministry of Mining’s initiatives reflect a broader commitment to not only develop the industry but also to ensure that the benefits of mining are felt at the community level. By focusing on artisanal and small-scale miners, the government aims to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all Basotho, leveraging the nation’s natural wealth for collective advancement.
With ongoing efforts to support this vital sector, Lesotho stands on the cusp of realizing the full potential of its mining resources, paving the way for enhanced economic development and improved living standards for its citizens.
