European Union and Lesotho Advance Water Security Through LLWDP-II Infrastructure Progress at Tšehlanyane River

The partnership between the European Union in Lesotho and the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority continues to deliver major infrastructure improvements under the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase II. The project focuses on strengthening water transfer systems that connect highland water sources to lowland communities that face seasonal shortages. A key component of this work is taking place at the Tšehlanyane River, where construction supports the transfer of water from Katse Dam to towns such as Hlotse, Maputsoe, and nearby villages. These areas often experience reduced water availability during low flow seasons, which places pressure on households, schools, and local services. The ongoing development aims to create a more stable and reliable supply system that can support long term demand.

Recent inspections brought together teams from the Commissioner of Water, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, LLWDP II, and the Water and Sewerage Company. The joint site visit focused on the Tšehlanyane Adit Tunnel, where construction work is actively underway. Engineers and project officials assessed progress, construction quality, and installation milestones inside the tunnel. The inspection confirmed that the project has reached about 67 percent overall construction progress, which reflects steady advancement toward completion. Such coordinated oversight ensures that technical standards remain high and that the project stays aligned with national water supply goals.

Significant progress has been recorded inside the tunnel infrastructure, including the successful installation of 666 metres of pipeline. This pipeline is a central part of the system that will transport water efficiently from Katse Dam into the Hlotse River during periods of low rainfall. The improved design is intended to enhance controlled water release, reduce losses, and support consistent downstream distribution. Once fully operational, the system will improve reliability for domestic use, public facilities, and small businesses in the northern regions of Lesotho. The construction work also strengthens the overall resilience of national water infrastructure against seasonal variability.

When completed, the LLWDP-II Tšehlanyane River project is expected to deliver long lasting benefits for water security across the lowlands. Communities in Hlotse, Maputsoe, and surrounding areas will gain improved access to safe drinking water and more stable sanitation services. This will reduce the pressure caused by recurring shortages during dry periods and support healthier living conditions. The project also contributes to broader national development objectives by improving infrastructure reliability and supporting economic activity in growing towns. Continued collaboration between development partners and local institutions remains central to ensuring successful delivery and sustainable water management outcomes in northern Lesotho.
