UNFPA and SolidarMed Explore Digital Health and Youth Support Strategies in Lesotho

The United Nations Population Fund continues to expand its efforts to strengthen health systems and youth support services in Lesotho through strategic partnerships. In a recent engagement, UNFPA Representative to Lesotho John Kennedy Mosoti met with the SolidarMed Lesotho team to explore new approaches that can improve access to essential health services and life skills programs for young people. The meeting included SolidarMed Technical Director Dr. Irene Ayakaka and Lesotho Programme Manager Ms. Pauline Grimm. Their discussions focused on identifying practical strategies that respond to the needs of communities while strengthening the country’s healthcare delivery system. The collaboration reflects a growing commitment to innovative solutions that combine health services, technology and youth empowerment.

A central focus of the meeting involved exploring the potential of information technology hubs that could serve as safe and supportive spaces for young people. These hubs would allow youth to access reliable health information, digital learning tools and life skills training in one place. In many communities, young people struggle to find trusted sources of information about sexual and reproductive health. By creating structured digital spaces, organizations can help bridge that gap while encouraging informed decision making. The hubs could also provide mentorship opportunities and practical digital skills that prepare young people for employment and entrepreneurship in an increasingly digital world.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of strengthening sexual and reproductive health services for young people across Lesotho. Adolescents and young adults often face barriers when trying to access accurate health information and supportive services. These barriers may include stigma, distance from health facilities or limited awareness about available programs. Through coordinated initiatives between UNFPA and SolidarMed, the goal is to ensure that young people receive the knowledge and services they need to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Expanding youth focused programs remains a critical step toward improving public health outcomes and reducing preventable health risks.

Another major area of discussion centered on the deployment of E health solutions to support Village Health Workers throughout the country. Village Health Workers play a vital role in Lesotho’s healthcare system because they serve as the first point of contact for many rural communities. However, these workers often face challenges when it comes to communication, record keeping and timely access to medical information. Introducing digital tools can help them capture patient data more efficiently and communicate with healthcare facilities in real time. These improvements allow health workers to provide faster support to patients while ensuring that critical health information reaches doctors and clinics when it is needed most.

The use of E health systems could also significantly improve maternal health services in remote areas. Pregnant women living far from hospitals often depend on community health workers for early monitoring and guidance. Digital platforms can help track pregnancies, schedule follow up visits and alert medical professionals when complications arise. This level of coordination increases the chances of early intervention and safer outcomes for both mothers and newborns. By equipping Village Health Workers with the right technology, healthcare providers can extend essential services to communities that might otherwise struggle to access them.

The meeting between UNFPA and SolidarMed reflects a shared vision of using innovation to strengthen health systems while empowering young people. By combining digital infrastructure, community based healthcare and youth focused services, the partnership aims to create lasting improvements in how health support reaches communities. Investments in digital tools and youth development programs can help address both current challenges and future needs. Lesotho continues to explore partnerships that place communities at the center of development efforts. Through initiatives like these, the country moves closer to a future where accessible healthcare and informed youth contribute to stronger and healthier communities.
