Lesotho Secures Seat on African Union Peace and Security Council

Lesotho has officially secured a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council following a successful vote, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic and regional engagement. The achievement positions Lesotho to play a more active role in shaping continental peace, security, and stability agendas. The announcement drew immediate attention from both national and regional media, prompting the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Lejone Mpotjoane, to share his reflections on the significance of the win. The Minister highlighted that Lesotho’s election reflects recognition of the country’s commitment to peace initiatives and constructive regional collaboration. The PSC seat provides Lesotho with an influential platform to contribute to policy decisions affecting conflict prevention and crisis management across Africa.
Following the announcement, Honourable Mpotjoane engaged in a bilateral meeting with Algeria, which extended congratulations on Lesotho’s election to the Council. The discussion emphasized enhancing bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors critical to sustainable development. Key areas identified included the development of data centres, improvement of fisheries management, and water preservation initiatives. These sectors were highlighted as opportunities to strengthen technical collaboration, boost economic resilience, and support environmental sustainability. Both countries underscored the importance of leveraging shared expertise to achieve tangible outcomes for communities and national economies.
The PSC seat also opens avenues for Lesotho to influence continental peacebuilding strategies while aligning national priorities with African Union objectives. By participating in Council deliberations, Lesotho can contribute to early warning mechanisms, conflict resolution frameworks, and security sector reforms. The country’s active involvement is expected to enhance regional stability and promote collaborative responses to emerging threats. This achievement further reinforces Lesotho’s reputation as a reliable partner in African diplomacy. With strengthened international partnerships, Lesotho is now better positioned to drive initiatives that combine peace, security, and development across the continent.
