Global Partnerships Key to Advancing Digital Literacy in Lesotho and Africa, Says Ambassador Sekete

Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), Ms. Nts’iuoa Sekete, has emphasized the vital role of international partnerships in shaping the future of digital literacy across the African continent.

Speaking during her participation in a recent online Digital Innovators Summit (DIS), Ambassador Sekete highlighted the urgency for Africa—and Lesotho in particular—to actively embrace and adapt to rapid technological advancements, especially in the realm of digital innovation and artificial intelligence (AI).

“We cannot afford to be left behind,” Sekete said. “Technological change is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, and partnerships across the globe remain critical in ensuring that Africa keeps up and thrives in this new digital age.”

The Ambassador reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Lesotho’s digital growth through engagement at the African Union level. She emphasized the importance of aligning national strategies with broader continental efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure, promote digital skills development, and ensure inclusive access to technology for all citizens, particularly the youth and women.

With artificial intelligence rapidly transforming education, healthcare, agriculture, and various other sectors, Sekete noted that it is imperative for African nations to invest in digital literacy programs and collaborate with global partners to close the digital divide.

“Artificial intelligence is not just a buzzword; it’s shaping the future,” she stated. “Lesotho must harness its potential to equip our people with the skills they need to be competitive in the global economy.”

Her remarks come at a time when the African Union has increased its focus on digital transformation, recognizing it as a cornerstone for sustainable development across the continent. Initiatives such as the AU’s Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa 2020–2030 aim to provide a framework for member states to collaborate, innovate, and build resilient digital economies.

Ambassador Sekete’s participation in the Digital Innovators Summit underscores Lesotho’s commitment to being an active player in the continental and global digital transformation movement. By building strong partnerships and investing in digital education, the country aims to prepare its citizens for a tech-driven future.
