Lesotho Signs Two Key SADC Protocols to Strengthen Data, Labour and Regional Integration

The Government of Lesotho has taken a major step toward deepening regional cooperation. This morning, the country signed two critical Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocols: the Protocol on Statistics and the Protocol on Employment and Labour.
Both agreements mark a strong reaffirmation of Lesotho’s commitment to regional integration, good governance, and evidence-based development.
The SADC Protocol on Statistics, approved by Heads of State in 2021, sets a legal foundation for cooperation in statistical development and data harmonization. It promotes the use of reliable and high-quality data to support planning and policymaking in the region. The Protocol also seeks to strengthen the capacity of national statistical systems, enabling member countries to share comparable data and improve monitoring of regional goals.
Accurate data plays a key role in policy alignment and accountability. Through this Protocol, Lesotho aims to modernize its data systems, enhance transparency, and ensure that policies are guided by credible evidence. The agreement supports the integration of new technologies and innovation in data collection and analysis, fostering collaboration among SADC Member States.
The SADC Protocol on Employment and Labour, adopted in 2023, addresses labour challenges across the region. It promotes decent work, fair labour standards, and inclusive employment opportunities. The Protocol emphasizes youth and women’s empowerment, protection of migrant workers, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workforce.
It also calls for stronger social dialogue between governments, employers, and workers’ organizations to improve labour relations and reduce inequalities. By joining this initiative, Lesotho reinforces its goal to build a more inclusive and resilient labour market aligned with international standards.
Lesotho’s signing of both Protocols reflects a long-term vision of shared prosperity within the SADC region. The move aligns national development priorities with regional frameworks aimed at improving livelihoods, job creation, and evidence-based governance.
Through these commitments, Lesotho continues to position itself as an active contributor to regional progress, advancing the goals of sustainable development, economic integration, and social justice.
