Lesotho Commemorates World Mental Health Day with Focus on Access to Services

On November 19, 2025, the Ministry of Health held a special event at Pitso Ground in Maseru to commemorate World Mental Health Day. The gathering brought together the Basotho community and various stakeholders to reflect on mental health awareness, despite the international observance occurring on October 10.

The District Medical Officer, Dr Tilo Namane, explained that Lesotho marks the day on October 19 and highlighted the importance of collective participation. He stated that this year’s theme, “Access to Services: Mental Health Catastrophes and Emergencies,” underlines the necessity of integrating mental health support into all healthcare services.

Dr Namane stressed that mental health care must be accessible at all stages of life. He noted that during disasters or emergencies, mental health services play a critical role in helping affected individuals regain normal daily functioning. Immediate and post-event support ensures communities can recover more effectively.

He further emphasized that mental wellbeing is vital for national resilience. Strengthening mental health through community support, resilience, hope, and empathy can prepare Lesotho to face future challenges. According to Dr Namane, a nation that prioritizes mental health is better equipped to maintain stability during crises.

The event highlighted Lesotho’s commitment to improving mental health access, raising awareness, and fostering a culture where mental wellbeing is recognized as an essential part of public health. It served as a reminder that building strong communities starts with strong minds.
