School Garden Campaign Promotes Food Security and Nutrition in Qachasnek

Yesterday, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training Qachasnek and with support from the World Food Programme, held a School Garden Campaign at Patlong Primary School, Qhoalinyane Resource Centre in Ha Sekake. The initiative aimed to promote food security and improved nutrition among learners and the wider community.

The campaign introduced practical gardening techniques, demonstrating how schools can grow vegetables and other nutritious crops to supplement meals and teach children about healthy eating. Participants learned about soil preparation, planting, watering, and sustainable garden management practices.

School gardens offer multiple benefits, including access to fresh produce, improved dietary diversity, and enhanced learning opportunities for students. By integrating gardening into school programs, children gain practical knowledge on agriculture while contributing to household food security.

The event also encouraged collaboration between schools, communities, and local authorities to ensure the long-term sustainability of the gardens. Through initiatives like this, the ministries and supporting partners aim to strengthen food systems, promote healthy eating habits, and empower communities to take active roles in improving nutrition and food availability.
