The event, held in the capital, celebrated sportsmanship, unity, and national pride while reinforcing the country’s commitment to youth development through sports.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the arrival of the Queen’s Baton, an integral part of the international Queen’s Baton Relay, which precedes the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from His Majesty King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, and is traveling through all member countries and territories in the lead-up to the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Minister Maqelepo received the Queen’s Baton from Commonwealth gold medalist Mr. Thabiso Moqhali. In a symbolic gesture, he passed it to a group of young athletes, representing the next generation of sporting talent in Lesotho. This moment underscored the role of youth in shaping the nation’s future and highlighted the values of teamwork and perseverance that sports continue to instill.
In his address, Minister Maqelepo emphasized the transformative power of sports in empowering young people, promoting peace, and fostering cultural exchange within the Commonwealth. He commended the athletes for their hard work and determination, encouraging them to continue striving for excellence both on and off the field.
The Maseru Youth Games are expected to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, build confidence, and gain valuable experience. With the Queen’s Baton Relay adding symbolic significance, the event also positioned Lesotho within the larger Commonwealth sporting community, inspiring athletes and citizens alike as the world looks ahead to the Games.
This opening ceremony marked not only the beginning of the Maseru Youth Games but also a celebration of unity and shared values that connect Lesotho to the global Commonwealth family.
