
On 4 October 2025, the Embassy of Lesotho in Washington, D.C., together with the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations and the Basotho communities in the United States, hosted a celebration marking Lesotho’s 59th Independence Anniversary. The event took place at Lesotho’s official residence in New York City.
The celebration brought together Basotho nationals, students, and friends of Lesotho from across the United States. The gathering highlighted the country’s cultural identity and unity, featuring traditional food, music, and dance that reflected the spirit of the Basotho people.
Permanent Representative and Ambassador H.E. Matete ’Nena delivered the keynote address. She praised the resilience, pride, and cultural heritage of Basotho both at home and abroad. H.E. Nena reflected on the nation’s journey since achieving independence in 1966, noting that despite economic and social challenges, Lesotho continues to stand firm on the values of unity and progress.
She encouraged the Basotho diaspora to remain active participants in the country’s development. She emphasized education, innovation, and community involvement as key drivers of national growth. Her remarks also acknowledged the efforts of Basotho students and professionals living in the United States who contribute to Lesotho’s development through knowledge exchange and remittances.
The event also served as a moment of reflection and celebration of Lesotho’s achievements over the past six decades. Guests enjoyed traditional Basotho dishes, cultural performances, and music that showcased the nation’s artistic heritage. The vibrant atmosphere reminded attendees of their shared roots and collective responsibility in building a prosperous Lesotho.
