Prime Minister Matekane Hands Over Principal Chief’s Office in Botha Bothe

Hon. Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane today handed over the office of the Principal Chief of Botha Bothe to Chief Retšelisitsoe Mopeli at Ha Mopeli. The event marked another step in the government’s efforts to strengthen traditional leadership structures while ensuring public services are delivered closer to the people.
Prime Minister Matekane said the office of the Principal Chief plays a key role in providing services at the community level. He noted that its establishment reflects respect for customs and traditions while recognizing the responsibilities carried by chiefs. He urged Chief Mopeli to ensure the office delivers efficient and accessible services to the public.
Minister of Local Government and Chiefdom, Home Affairs and Police Hon. Lebona Lephema highlighted that the construction of the building is part of his ministry’s broader implementation plan. He explained that this initiative is designed to support local governance and ensure citizens receive services in their communities.
The office handed over today is the twenty-second to be built for Principal Chiefs across the country. Its construction cost M5 million, reflecting the government’s continued investment in infrastructure that supports both governance and cultural heritage.
The ceremony was attended by several cabinet ministers, including Hon. Lebona Lephema, Hon. Ntoi Rapapa, Hon. Lejone Mpotjoane, Hon. Nthati Moorosi, Hon. Letsema Adontshi, and Justice Nthomeng Majara. Principal Secretaries from different departments and senior government officials also took part, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
The handover is expected to improve service delivery in Botha Bothe while strengthening the role of traditional leadership in Lesotho’s governance framework.
