Lesotho Resumes Youth Recruitment Drive to Tackle Unemployment

The Minister of Information, Communication, Science and Innovation, Ms. Nthati Moorosi, has announced the resumption of youth recruitment across Lesotho as part of the government’s efforts to combat the country’s persistently high unemployment rate.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Ms. Moorosi confirmed that the recruitment process is now underway following a directive from the Prime Minister aimed at creating more job opportunities for young people. She expressed confidence that by the end of the month, a significant number of youth will have secured employment.
“This initiative is a direct response to the growing concern about youth unemployment in Lesotho,” said Ms. Moorosi. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that young people with qualifications, particularly those with diplomas, are integrated into the workforce.”
At the heart of the effort is the newly launched Youth Apprentice Programme, a government-led employment scheme designed to provide job placements for diploma holders for a period of two years. Under the programme, young professionals are deployed to various government ministries in roles aligned with their academic backgrounds and skill sets.
The programme is expected to serve as a stepping stone for youth entering the job market, offering them practical experience, mentorship, and exposure to the public sector environment.
Ms. Moorosi emphasized that the initiative is not only about providing short-term employment, but also about building capacity among the country’s youth. By empowering young people with workplace skills and experience, the government hopes to enhance their future employability and support long-term economic growth.
As the recruitment process gathers momentum, eligible youth across the country are being encouraged to apply and take advantage of the opportunity. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the selection process.
With thousands of graduates currently struggling to find work, the Youth Apprentice Programme is seen as a timely intervention that could provide hope and stability for many Basotho families.
