Lesotho Launches Youth Employment Drive in Mokhotlong to Combat Unemployment

In a bold move to curb rising unemployment, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has begun recruiting young people in Mokhotlong, Thabang. The initiative, carried out through the Roads Directorate, aims to provide short-term employment to youth in the maintenance of the A1 road, stretching from Hakotsie to Mokhotlong Hospital.
On Thursday, large numbers of hopeful youth, joined by community elders, gathered for registration. The turnout reflected the pressing need for job opportunities in the region, particularly among young people seeking a pathway to economic stability.
This is not the first time the government has brought such opportunities to the region. Earlier this year, a similar recruitment exercise took place in Tlokoeng Mapholaneng, demonstrating a consistent effort to bring job creation closer to rural and underserved communities.
Among those who registered was Mr. Khotso Rantso, a young man from the area who expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “I’m happy to be part of this,” he said. “But I had hoped we would get at least three to six months of work. A longer contract would have meant real change for our families.”
The employment programme, though short-term, is a vital lifeline for many who have been struggling to find stable work. While specific employment durations and wages were not confirmed, the initiative promises immediate relief and the chance for participants to contribute to essential infrastructure maintenance in their own communities.
By focusing on the repair and upkeep of critical roads like the A1, the Ministry not only creates jobs but also enhances road safety and transport efficiency—key factors in stimulating local economic growth.
With unemployment remaining a major concern in Lesotho, especially among the youth, such programmes serve as an important step toward building a more inclusive economy. The success and sustainability of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives across other districts.
