Lesotho Concludes Landmark Data Governance Workshop with Focus on Innovation and Cross-Border Collaboration

The Government of Lesotho has officially closed its multi-day Governance Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement Workshop, marking a pivotal step in advancing the country’s digital transformation and data governance agenda. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Kanono Leronti Ramashamole, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), who spoke on behalf of Minister Hon. Nthati Moorosi.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Ramashamole emphasized the strategic importance of data governance in the digital era. He stated that the workshop has solidified a critical truth—that data is no longer simply an administrative byproduct, but rather a “strategic national asset” at the heart of modern governance. He noted its growing role in enabling efficient public service delivery, driving innovation, and enhancing trade, both domestically and across borders.
“As we move towards implementing data exchange platforms,” said Mr. Ramashamole, “we must prioritize how data is handled—not just within our own country, but across the region. Responsible data governance is not just a technical necessity—it is a governance imperative.”
A key focus of the workshop was the secure handling of financial data and the establishment of interoperable data systems that can function both locally and internationally. This reflects Lesotho’s broader commitment to enhancing digital governance frameworks that align with global standards and practices.
The workshop also garnered regional attention with the participation of Dr. Wairagala Wakabi, Executive Director of the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA). In his address, Dr. Wakabi commended the Government of Lesotho for engaging with the African Union to harmonize its Data Policy Framework with that of the AU.
He praised Lesotho’s proactive approach, stating, “We live in a digital-first world where data has become the engine of innovation, work, and learning. Aligning national policies with continental frameworks ensures that Lesotho is not left behind in this data-driven future.”
The successful conclusion of the workshop marks an important milestone in Lesotho’s digital development journey, positioning the country as a forward-thinking player in regional data governance and digital policy. The commitments made are expected to pave the way for more transparent, efficient, and inclusive public services powered by responsible data management.
