
In an inspiring initiative to uplift rural women economically, the Chinese Group—a nutrition-based club at Corn Exchange in Bela-Bela—has launched a groundbreaking project centered on the extraction of medicinal juice from the Pickled Prickly Pear, locally known as Torofeiee. This community-driven endeavor reflects a growing movement of innovation and resilience in rural development.
Chinese Group chairperson, Mrs. Mamoipone Selialia, explained that although their core focus lies in nutrition education—particularly offering sessions for pregnant and nursing mothers and encouraging household-level crop production—the group recognized the importance of diversifying their programs. The new venture into pickled prickly pear processing serves both health and income-generating purposes, aligning with their broader goal of building a healthy and economically active community.
The project involves turning the Torofeiee fruit into a pickled product from which juice is extracted for medicinal use. According to Mrs. Selialia, the juice has shown potential in alleviating conditions like arthritis and is also being used in cosmetic formulations. Despite the fruit’s unconventional appearance, it is proving to be a hidden gem in terms of both health benefits and economic value.
One of the key drivers of the project’s early success has been the group’s rural location. Local markets have shown growing interest in the product, and the Chinese Group is already laying the groundwork to expand their reach to other communities. This forward-thinking model not only boosts the livelihoods of women involved but also introduces affordable, natural remedies into everyday healthcare practices.
By tapping into the traditional knowledge and natural resources of their environment, the Chinese Group is setting a powerful example of how grassroots innovation can contribute to both community health and rural economic empowerment.
