e-Government Coordinator Highlights Vision for Digital Ecosystem Amid Youth Unemployment Challenges

Mr. Lebeko Sello, the e-Government Coordinator under the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), recently emphasized the ambition to build a robust digital ecosystem in Lesotho. Speaking at the launch of the National Digital Transformation Strategy and the Ministerial Strategy in Maseru on Wednesday, Mr. Sello outlined the project’s goal to integrate digital technologies across government services to drive innovation, efficiency, and inclusive growth.

During the event, Mr. Sello acknowledged the pressing challenge posed by the current high youth unemployment rate in Lesotho, describing it as a “gloomy future” if unaddressed. However, he encouraged young people to view the ongoing digital transformation as a beacon of opportunity. He urged the youth to remain focused, highlighting that the digital ecosystem being developed can create new pathways for employment, entrepreneurship, and skills development.

The National Digital Transformation Strategy and Ministerial Strategy aim to enhance internet access, improve digital literacy, and foster a supportive environment for tech-driven startups and small businesses. According to Mr. Sello, these initiatives will not only streamline government services but also empower citizens, especially the youth, to participate actively in the digital economy.

By investing in a comprehensive digital ecosystem, the government hopes to unlock potential across sectors such as education, health, commerce, and public administration. The approach is designed to build resilience, promote innovation, and ensure no one is left behind in Lesotho’s journey toward a digitally connected future.

Mr. Sello’s remarks at the launch underscore a critical moment for Lesotho’s development, where digital transformation is positioned as a vital tool to tackle unemployment and stimulate sustainable economic growth. With strategic policies and dedicated leadership, the country aims to harness technology as a catalyst for empowering its youth and strengthening the overall economy.
