Lesotho and Jordan Establish Diplomatic Ties at the United Nations

On 07 May 2025, the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan officially established formal diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, marking a significant milestone in international cooperation for both nations. The historic agreement was signed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, solidifying a shared commitment to mutual collaboration and global peace initiatives.

The signing ceremony was led by His Excellency Mr. Matete ‘Nena, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations, who signed on behalf of the Government of Lesotho. Representing the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was His Excellency Mr. Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

This development signifies more than just formal diplomacy—it is a bridge between two geographically distant nations with common goals in the international arena. Both countries are active members of the United Nations and have consistently demonstrated support for multilateralism, peacekeeping, and development programs.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, located in Western Asia, is widely regarded as one of the most stable and secure Arab nations in the Middle East. Its capital, Amman, is a key hub for several UN operations, particularly the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Jordan plays a critical humanitarian role through its support of Palestinian refugees, reinforcing its global standing as a cooperative and peace-oriented nation.

Similarly, Lesotho, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, continues to uphold its commitment to diplomacy and sustainable development through active engagement in the UN system. The country’s shared interests with Jordan—especially in the areas of peacebuilding, humanitarian efforts, and sustainable development—form a strong foundation for bilateral cooperation.

The establishment of these diplomatic ties is expected to encourage future collaboration between Lesotho and Jordan in sectors such as education, health, trade, and international advocacy. Moreover, the partnership enhances each country’s global network and opens opportunities for cultural exchange and technical support.

As the two nations take this important diplomatic step, their collaboration is likely to strengthen their influence within the United Nations and beyond, paving the way for impactful joint initiatives in the years ahead.
