African Union Commission Strengthens Governance for Africa Urban Resilience Programme

The African Union Commission (AUC) has strengthened governance and coordination for the Africa Urban Resilience Programme (AURP) through the operationalisation of the AURP Steering Committee and the Technical Working Group.
The AURP Steering Committee will serve as the programme’s governing body, overseeing implementation and setting the strategic vision. The Directorate of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy at the AUC will act as the Secretariat of the Steering Committee, ensuring alignment of activities with continental priorities.
The Technical Working Group brings together AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities, the AUC, multilateral and bilateral partners, women, and other stakeholders engaged in resilience-building. Its role is to support implementation at national, regional, continental, and global levels, while promoting inclusive participation in urban resilience initiatives.
Mr. Harsen Nyambe Nyambe, Director of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy at the AUC, described the development as a milestone. “The operationalisation of the Africa Urban Resilience Programme’s governance and coordination mechanisms is a milestone towards streamlining multi-agency collaboration for the AURP’s implementation,” he said.
The move signals the AUC’s commitment to advancing sustainable urban development and building resilience against environmental, economic, and social challenges across African cities.
