Lesotho and South Africa Strengthen Migration Cooperation at Bloemfontein Workshop

The Governments of Lesotho and South Africa, supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and regional partners, convened a Validation Workshop on Migration Cooperation in Bloemfontein, Free State, on 27 November 2025. The workshop focused on reviewing and validating the Draft Research Report titled Towards the Development of a Pan-African Model on Migration Management and the Cross-Border Mobility of Goods, Conveyances, Capital and Services.

The event brought together policymakers, migration experts, and regional stakeholders to assess strategies that enhance safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial migration. Participants examined key findings from the draft research, emphasizing frameworks for cross-border movement of people and goods, and the harmonization of migration policies between the two countries.

Officials highlighted the critical role of bilateral collaboration in addressing migration challenges, including irregular migration, border security, and the facilitation of trade and investment flows. The workshop provided a platform to identify best practices, gaps, and actionable recommendations that can be implemented at both national and regional levels.

The Validation Workshop also serves as a stepping stone toward developing a Pan-African model for migration management. This model seeks to strengthen regional integration, improve mobility, and create economic opportunities while safeguarding human rights and protecting vulnerable populations. By aligning policies and practices, Lesotho and South Africa aim to set a regional precedent for effective migration governance.

The outcomes of the workshop are expected to inform policy decisions, guide future research, and promote closer collaboration among African nations. Strengthened migration cooperation between Lesotho and South Africa will not only benefit the two countries but also contribute to the broader objectives of regional stability, economic development, and continental integration.

The workshop reflects a shared commitment to advancing migration frameworks that balance economic growth, security, and human mobility, reinforcing the role of cooperative governance in shaping the future of migration across Africa.
