Twelve Primary Schools Gear Up for WASH and Nutrition-Themed Science Fair in Ramoliehi

Twelve primary schools are set to showcase their knowledge and creativity in a highly anticipated Science Fair scheduled for May 28 at Ramoliehi Primary School. The event, which will feature quizzes and interactive learning activities, will focus on key themes of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) as well as Nutrition.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Mr. Mocheta Makara, Food and Nutrition Supervisor at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), during the organization’s monthly Nutrition Team meeting.

Mr. Makara highlighted that the upcoming fair aims to reinforce important health and nutrition practices among students while encouraging academic excellence through friendly competition. “The fair will not only test knowledge but also reward schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to hygiene and nutrition,” he said.

The top three schools will walk away with practical and impactful prizes, including gardening tools, sanitary towels, cleaning supplies, storybooks, and musical instruments. The overall winning school will receive a circulating trophy in recognition of their achievement.

In addition to the quiz competition, six schools that will not participate in the main science fair have been given the opportunity to compete in a separate drama competition. The winning school in this category will also receive gardening tools to support their agricultural and nutrition efforts.

To ensure that only qualifying schools take part in the event, CRS has initiated ongoing assessments at schools under the Litsoetse Center. These evaluations focus on hygiene compliance and the effective use of agricultural inputs provided through CRS programs. Only schools that demonstrate adherence to hygiene practices and make good use of the resources will qualify for the competitions.

“All twelve schools will be recognized for their efforts with medals,” Mr. Makara confirmed, adding that the Science Fair is not only about winning but also about learning, building confidence, and promoting sustainable health practices in schools.

The initiative reflects CRS’s broader goals of supporting school-based health and nutrition education, promoting community development, and encouraging children to be agents of positive change in their schools and homes.

As the May 28 event approaches, excitement is building among students, teachers, and communities, with many hopeful that the fair will inspire lasting improvements in hygiene and nutrition practices across participating schools.
