Lesotho Moves to Establish Central Road Accident Coordination Centre

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced plans to establish a Centre that will coordinate all departments involved in the management and prevention of road accidents. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to address the high number of fatalities and injuries caused by road incidents across the country. From March 19 to March 20, 2026, the Ministry, through its Road Safety Department, held a two-day meeting at Thaba Bosiu to develop a clear strategy for the Centre’s establishment. The meeting brought together key stakeholders from various departments to discuss how best to integrate resources and streamline responses to road accidents. The focus was on creating a centralized system that will improve communication, reduce delays in emergency response, and enhance overall road safety.

The proposed Centre will operate as a centralized communication hub, equipped with an Internet connection linking all relevant departments. It will serve as a point where accident reports can be received, processed, and forwarded to the responsible agencies for immediate action. This system is designed to reduce inefficiencies caused by fragmented reporting and to ensure that every incident is addressed promptly. By coordinating departments such as emergency services, traffic enforcement, and health agencies, the Centre aims to provide faster, more effective responses to road accidents. Officials emphasized that this technological integration is essential for modernizing road safety measures and saving lives.

During the two-day meeting, participants assessed existing Centres and departmental capabilities to determine how the new Centre could work effectively with current structures. The evaluation focused on identifying strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in communication and reporting procedures. By understanding how each department operates, planners can design a system that integrates all relevant processes seamlessly. The discussion also included potential challenges, such as resource limitations and training requirements, to ensure the Centre’s operations would be sustainable. The meeting highlighted the importance of coordination and collaboration as central components of any effective road safety strategy.

A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing policies and regulations within the Road Safety Department and other relevant agencies. This review aimed to identify areas where the new Centre could align with existing legislation and policy frameworks. Aligning the Centre’s operations with current regulations will make it easier to draft new legislation necessary to formally establish the agency. The participants considered policy adjustments needed to support the Centre’s mandate and to ensure that interdepartmental cooperation would be legally binding. The outcome of this review will guide the development of operational guidelines, reporting protocols, and legislative proposals.

The Ministry anticipates holding follow-up meetings to monitor progress and ensure the Centre is established efficiently. These meetings will review implementation steps, assess resource allocation, and address any operational challenges. Once operational, the Centre is expected to significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of emergency responses, reduce road fatalities, and strengthen national road safety management. The project demonstrates Lesotho’s commitment to proactive, coordinated approaches in addressing road safety issues. By combining technology, policy alignment, and interdepartmental collaboration, the Centre will serve as a critical tool in reducing the human and economic costs of road accidents across the country.
