Launch of Rural Electrification Project at Lifotholeng / Tebalete

The Government of Lesotho officially launched the Rural Electrification Project at Lifotholeng and Tebalete on 16 February 2026, marking a major step in expanding electricity access to underserved communities. The event drew government officials, local leaders and residents who gathered to witness the start of infrastructure development that will transform daily life in the two villages. This project forms part of the national strategy to increase rural electrification and reduce the gap between urban and rural access to power. Many households in these areas have operated without reliable electricity for years, limiting economic activity and access to modern services. The launch signaled a clear commitment to accelerate development through practical energy solutions.

The project will extend the national grid to connect homes, schools, clinics and small businesses in Lifotholeng and Tebalete. Installation of power lines, transformers and household meters will take place in phases to ensure stable and safe supply. Access to electricity will allow families to use lighting, refrigeration and electronic devices more efficiently and safely. Learners will benefit from better study conditions at night, while local entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to expand businesses that depend on power. Reliable electricity will also reduce reliance on firewood and paraffin, which often pose health and environmental risks.

Rural electrification plays a direct role in economic growth and poverty reduction. When communities gain access to power, productivity increases and new income opportunities emerge. Small enterprises such as welding shops, salons and retail stores can operate longer hours and improve service delivery. Health facilities can store vaccines and medicines safely, and schools can integrate digital learning tools into classrooms. By investing in infrastructure at Lifotholeng and Tebalete, the government is strengthening the foundation for sustainable rural development.

The launch of the Rural Electrification Project reflects Lesotho’s broader goal of achieving universal access to modern energy. Expanding electricity coverage remains central to national development planning and social progress. Projects like this help bridge inequality and create equal opportunities for rural citizens. As construction moves forward, residents expect measurable improvements in quality of life and economic participation. The Lifotholeng and Tebalete electrification rollout stands as a practical example of how targeted infrastructure investment can drive lasting change in rural Lesotho.
