Lesotho Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with China at Quarterly Coordination Mechanism Launch

The Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Relations of Lesotho, Mr. Thabang Lekhela, delivered a keynote address at the Launch Reception of the Quarterly Coordination Mechanism between the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The event was held in Maseru on 20 January 2026.

During his address, Mr. Lekhela highlighted the successful official visit of H.E. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, to Lesotho. He reaffirmed the long-standing and cordial relations between the two nations, emphasizing China’s critical support for Lesotho’s national development priorities. The Principal Secretary noted that the partnership has consistently advanced Lesotho’s infrastructure, human resource development, healthcare, and education sectors.

Mr. Lekhela also stressed the importance of sustaining cooperation through structured engagement, such as the Quarterly Coordination Mechanism. He underscored that both countries share a commitment to multilateralism, mutual respect, and collaborative progress. This mechanism is expected to enhance dialogue, facilitate timely decision-making, and ensure continued implementation of bilateral projects.

In his remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, H.E. Yang Xiaokun, acknowledged the Principal Secretary’s address and reiterated China’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic relations. He affirmed China’s ongoing support for Lesotho’s development goals and emphasized the commitment to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation across multiple sectors.

The launch of the Quarterly Coordination Mechanism reflects the deepening partnership between Lesotho and China. By institutionalizing regular diplomatic and technical dialogue, both countries aim to maintain steady progress in key areas of development while reinforcing their shared values of cooperation, respect, and mutual growth.
