Lesotho Ministry of Public Works and Transport Launches Road Incident Management Initiative

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport in Lesotho is taking decisive steps to address the growing challenge of road accidents in the country. In a move aimed at improving emergency response and reducing fatalities, the Ministry is preparing to establish a Road Incident Management System (RIMS). This system will ensure that when road accidents occur, relevant departments respond immediately and coordinate efficiently to provide assistance.

The RIMS initiative is designed to streamline communication between emergency services, including police, medical teams, fire services, and other key agencies. By having a centralized system, the Ministry aims to cut response times, enhance rescue operations, and provide real-time updates to all parties involved. This coordinated approach is expected to improve overall road safety and reduce the severity of accident outcomes.

To advance this project, the Ministry convened a meeting at the office of the District Governor of Maseru. Experts in road safety and transportation policy were invited to provide insights on how to develop a comprehensive framework for accident response. Discussions focused on creating policies that ensure seamless coordination among all stakeholders, improve accident reporting, and implement preventive measures.

The meeting emphasized the importance of combining technology, policy, and training to make RIMS effective. Experts highlighted the need for clear protocols, rapid data sharing, and public awareness campaigns to support the system. The Ministry confirmed that the policy will serve as a guiding framework for implementing RIMS nationwide, ensuring that every accident receives timely attention from the appropriate authorities.

This initiative reflects Lesotho’s commitment to improving road safety standards and reducing accident-related casualties. By prioritizing rapid coordination and expert-driven strategies, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport aims to create a safer road environment for all citizens.
