SADC Member States Gather for Cyber Drill and AfricaCERT Meeting 2025

SADC member states convened at a city hotel for the official opening programme of the 2025 Cyber Drill and AfricaCERT meeting, hosted by the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI). The event brings together cybersecurity experts, government officials, and regional stakeholders to enhance coordination and strengthen cyber resilience across Southern Africa. Participants will engage in practical exercises, knowledge-sharing sessions, and discussions on emerging cyber threats affecting the public and private sectors.

The cyber drill aims to test the readiness and response capabilities of national Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) within the SADC region. It provides a platform for member states to simulate cyber incidents, assess operational procedures, and identify gaps in national and regional cyber defence strategies. The initiative underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity in supporting economic growth, protecting critical infrastructure, and safeguarding sensitive information.

AfricaCERT, the continental network of national CERTs, will host a series of workshops and technical sessions during the meeting. Delegates will explore best practices for incident response, threat intelligence sharing, and capacity-building initiatives. MICSTI officials highlighted that regional collaboration is essential to address cross-border cyber risks and promote a unified approach to cybersecurity challenges.

The event also provides an opportunity for member states to review policy frameworks, discuss harmonization of cyber regulations, and develop strategies for public awareness campaigns. MICSTI emphasized the role of continuous training, investment in technology, and multi-stakeholder cooperation in building a robust cyber ecosystem. The gathering reinforces SADC’s commitment to strengthening digital security, fostering innovation, and ensuring that member states are equipped to respond effectively to cyber threats in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
