Prime Minister Matekane Joins SADC Leaders in Extraordinary Summit on Madagascar

On November 7, 2025, The Right Honourable Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane joined other Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government in an Extraordinary Virtual Summit. The meeting was convened to discuss the evolving situation in Madagascar and to provide strategic direction on the regional response.
The Summit, chaired by the current SADC Chairperson, brought together regional leaders to deliberate on the political and security developments in Madagascar. The discussions focused on promoting peace, stability, and constitutional order in the country, while reaffirming SADC’s commitment to regional solidarity and collective action in addressing crises within member states.
Prime Minister Matekane expressed Lesotho’s support for SADC’s mediation and conflict-resolution efforts. He underscored the importance of dialogue, adherence to democratic principles, and respect for the rule of law as foundations for lasting stability. He also commended the SADC Secretariat and the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation for their continued efforts in maintaining peace and supporting member states in times of political uncertainty.
The Heads of State and Government reviewed reports from the SADC Organ Troika and other relevant structures monitoring the situation in Madagascar. The leaders assessed progress in restoring political normalcy and examined possible measures to prevent further instability. The meeting reaffirmed SADC’s position that any resolution must be inclusive, locally driven, and aligned with regional principles of democracy and good governance.
The Extraordinary Summit concluded with a unified call for peace, urging all stakeholders in Madagascar to prioritise national interest and engage in constructive dialogue. SADC leaders pledged continued support to the people of Madagascar through diplomatic engagement, technical assistance, and regional cooperation.
Lesotho’s participation reinforced its active role in regional diplomacy and commitment to promoting peace and security in Southern Africa. The engagement also reflected Prime Minister Matekane’s continued collaboration with regional partners in advancing SADC’s vision of a stable, prosperous, and integrated community.
