Lesotho and UN Women Strengthen Partnership on Gender Equality and Development

On 3 November 2025, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Honourable Matjato Moteane, received a courtesy call from Ms. Anna Mutavati, the United Nations Women Regional Director for East and Southern Africa. Ms. Mutavati is in Lesotho on an official visit from 2 to 5 November 2025. The meeting offered an opportunity to discuss UN Women’s vision under its new Strategic Note for 2026–2029. The discussions highlighted ways to enhance women’s leadership, promote gender equality, and foster inclusive development at both national and global levels.
During the meeting, Hon. Moteane emphasized the importance of aligning Lesotho’s national strategies with global gender equality goals. He noted that women’s active participation in leadership and decision-making is essential for sustainable development. The Acting Minister also praised UN Women’s ongoing support for initiatives that empower women across political, economic, and social spheres. Both parties agreed that continued collaboration would strengthen Lesotho’s capacity to implement gender-responsive policies effectively.
Ms. Mutavati highlighted UN Women’s commitment to supporting Lesotho through a range of programmes. These initiatives focus on promoting women’s political participation, increasing economic empowerment opportunities, and advancing peacebuilding efforts. She also underscored the organization’s work in addressing gender-based violence and reinforcing legal frameworks that protect women’s rights. The Regional Director noted that empowering women is crucial for achieving long-term, sustainable development outcomes in Lesotho and across the region.
The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Lesotho and UN Women in driving gender-responsive development. Both parties agreed to continue their joint efforts to ensure women have equal opportunities to contribute to national growth. They highlighted the importance of inclusive policies that address barriers to women’s participation in all sectors of society. This engagement reflects a shared commitment to building a future where women play a central role in Lesotho’s social and economic development.
